When it comes to radio control, 2.4GHz radio control sets give far better performance than either AM or FM equipment. 2.4GHz radio control uses digital data transmission techniques which eliminates the signal interference that plagues analogue transmission systems on AM and FM. Simple 2.4GHz sets are often cheaper, give better performance, and don’t need crystals. It’s all done with micro-computer technology and collision avoidance software which identifies a free frequency. Gone are the days when you’ll have to apologise for accidentally using the same crystal frequency as someone else at meetings! Also, with more channels, they enable operation of more controls on model locomotives, other than just the regulator on steam locos, or the motor on battery locos. This is particularly relevant if you’re using metal bodied locos which can drastically reduce the range of low power systems.
